John R. Zajac, Esq.
John Zajac has spent more than two decades helping New Jersey families do something that most people know they should do but find surprisingly difficult to start: plan. As an estate planning and elder law attorney, his practice is grounded in the belief that thoughtful, proactive planning does not just protect assets. It preserves family harmony, reduces conflict, and gives people the freedom to live better today knowing that tomorrow is accounted for.
What sets Mr. Zajac apart is a career path that ran through both the private sector and the inner workings of New Jersey state government. Before joining Milvidskiy Law Group, he served as New Jersey’s Bureau Chief for Public Assistance Fraud and as in-house counsel for the Department of Human Services. Those roles gave him an unusually deep understanding of how Medicaid works from the inside, how eligibility is determined, how benefits interact with assets, and how families can find themselves caught off guard when long-term care needs arise without a plan in place. That institutional knowledge is not something that can be learned from a textbook, and it shows up in the quality and specificity of the guidance he provides.
For clients, that means working with an attorney who sees the full picture. Mr. Zajac approaches every matter with the same combination of legal precision and human awareness, whether the conversation involves a straightforward will, a complex irrevocable trust, a Medicaid spend-down strategy, or a family navigating the layered challenges of caring for a loved one with a disability. His clients consistently describe feeling relieved, organized, and genuinely empowered after completing their plans, many noting that his patient, educational approach finally helped them address something they had been putting off for years.
Mr. Zajac’s practice includes:
- Comprehensive estate planning (wills, trusts, advance directives, powers of attorney)
- Revocable and irrevocable trust planning
- Medicaid planning and asset protection
- Long-term care planning and guardianship minimization
- Probate avoidance and streamlined estate administration
- Special Needs Trusts and benefits-preservation planning
- Estate and inheritance tax planning
- Charitable giving and legacy planning
- Gifting strategies and generation-skipping planning
- Business succession planning
Beyond his client work, Mr. Zajac serves on the Board of Directors of The Arc of Somerset, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It is a role that reflects a longstanding personal commitment to vulnerable populations and the families who advocate for them. He is also a frequent speaker at community workshops and public education events on estate planning, Medicaid asset protection, and planning for individuals with disabilities.
Mr. Zajac earned his undergraduate degree from Rutgers University and his Juris Doctor from the Cardozo School of Law. He is licensed to practice law in New Jersey.
